City shuts down weekend traffic on Lombard Street.
The SFMTA board voted unanimously to close the Tourist attraction, yes the bendy part of Lombard Street on Saturdays and Sundays starting June 21st through July 13th, and on Friday, July 4th. Street closure times start at noon and reopen at 6 p.m.
Ā Residents cited safety issues & used past accidents involving vehicle collisions & pedestrian accidents. Residents were also concerned about congestion. You can view the main brief here. This proposal was introduced by the SFMTA with support from District Supervisor Mark Farrell, Lombard Hill Improvement Association and the Russian Hill Neighbors. This is only a pilot to see if a long term solution can be found to address both the residents & the cities concerns.
Of course for those of us who live here, Lombard street is not the crookedest street in San Francisco. If you want crooked, take a trip over to Potrero Hill and go down Vermont St. It has tighter turns and is more crooked than Lombard. Don’t tell anyone I said anything.
